House Passes “Expanding HSAs Act”!

Big win for patients and their doctors!

Today the House passed the bill H.R.6311, the “Expanding HSAs Act of 2018,” a bill endorsed by HSAs for All because it would significantly expand HSA eligibility and contribution limits, making it a solid step toward the goal of HSAs-for-all.

Among other things, the bill would effectively double HSA contribution limits and extend HSA eligibility to working seniors (currently not allowed).

  • The bill garnered 241 votes in favor and 176 votes against.
  • 230 Republicans and 12 Democrats voted yes.
  • 175 Democrats and 1 Republican voted no. *
  • 4 Representatives did not vote.
  • 6 House seats are currently vacant.

See how your Congressman voted.

During floor debate, Republican speakers uniformly supported the bill, touting HSAs as a tool for helping patients save for health care and take control of their own medical choices. Many Democratic speakers disparaged HSAs as “junk coverage” which, they claimed, does nothing to give people cheaper health care. Instead many Democratic speakers called for expanding access to existing government health care programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration. Senate leaders have not yet taken a position on the bill. But with the House and White House both in support, there’s a good chance the Senate will follow suit. That would be great news for consumers and their health care providers.

HSAs for All strongly supports the Expanding HSAs Act of 2018. If you support it too, be sure to convey your views to your U.S. Representative and your two U.S. Senators. And be sure to thank Representatives who voted yes.

On to the Senate!

* The lone Republican no vote was cast by Rep. Walter Jones of North Carolina. Mr. Jones says he does not vote for bills that would increase the federal deficit.
